The first open time trial since lockdown hosted by Medway Velo boasted a sold out quality field of top contenders ready to do battle over 10-miles to see who could cover the ground in the fastest time possible.

Starting at Ham Street, Ashford at 6.30am on Sunday, 9 August 2020 the riders headed out into a strong headwind before negotiating two roundabouts and turning for the chequered flag. Conditions were far from perfect with most riders facing some heavy rain for good measure.

This was the first real test for competitors in Kent to see if their lockdown training had improved their fitness and speed from the previous season. The times returned suggest the time spent in pain caves across the region paid off.

Chris Fennell of the Independent Pedaler dominated the field completing the course in a incredible 18mins 11secs some 90 seconds ahead of his brother Nic Fennell of Thanet RC who returned a time of 19mins 44secs. The third step on the podium was filled by Neil Harris of Southborough and District Wheelers who also broke the 20 minute mark with a ride of 19min 49secs.

The competition in the ladies competition was just as fierce and the only lady in the field to duck under the 23 minute mark was Lisa Davis of Trainsharp with 22mins 58secs. Hot on her heels and one to watch for the future was 13-year-old Carys Lloyd of VCL taking 2nd overall and winning the girls junior competition. The VCL colours were to make a second showing on the women’s podium with 16-year-old Amber Junker Brameld getting out and back in 23mins 55secs.

Several riders opted to ride the course on road bikes rather the time trial bikes and though included in the full results they had their own prize category also. The men’s event was won by Irfan Zaman of Bigfoot CC who rode a 21min 7sec closely followed by Neil Lauder of Artic Aircon RT in 21min 15secs.

In the ladies road bike event Grace Dent of Project 51 took the win in 24mins 51secs with Tracey Wilkinson Begg of TWB On Time RT in 27mins 42secs.

There were three riders forward for the hosting club Medway Velo. Bragging rights for first MVC home went to Lee Kingston who completed the course in 22mins 23secs. Next back was Alex Cook in 24mins dead. Third back was Sally Smith who was was pleased with her ride of 26mins 17secs.

Organiser Phil Booth said: ‘Due to the Covid-19 restrictions we had a lot to contend with in terms of organisation and I was encouraged by riders who listened to the guidelines, remained socially distanced and respected the restrictions imposed, as failure to do so could have dire consequences not just in terms of health but also the future of racing.

‘The racers certainly rewarded us by putting on an excellent show with some speedy and entertaining rides.

‘I would like to say a big thank you to the marshals, time keepers and helpers who all donned face masks for some 3 hours – without them there is no race.’

After months of restrictions racing finally got underway for the Medway Velo CC who hosted their first 10 mile Time Trial at Iwade on Wednesday 5 August 2020.

Despite blustery conditions some excellent times were returned by the riders in a successful socially distanced event. 

Fastest ride of the event went to Rodney Smith of Wigmore CC completing the 5 laps in 22mins 55secs. The next two podium spots were also claimed by the Wigmore with Anthony Bee pipping Keith Walker by just one second with a 23mins 18secs.

It was a hotly fought contest for 4th and 5th with Steve Smith nudging clubmate Matt Nunn out of fourth by just 2 secs with a ride of 24mins 32secs. Matt’s 24mins 34secs was a personal best on the course.

Also scoring a PB was Michael Stanley improving on his previous time by some 20secs to take 9th in 26mins 6secs.

The racing between the ladies was close with Kate Savage of Gravesend CC pulling out a PB to take the win with 26mins 22secs. Literally seconds separated 2nd and 3rd with Sally Smith of Medway Velo riding a course pb of 27mins 22secs with Rosie Wallace of Liv Awol in 3rd with a ride of 27mins 24secs.

Organiser Phil Booth said: “Thank you to all who supported the event, in particular the Marshals and helpers from the Medway and Wigmore CC.”

The next event for the club will take place on Sunday in Ashford and sees a full field of 120 riders taking on a fast 10 mile course. The best local riders have put their hat in the ring to take on those coming further afield -including professional riders who will have their eyes set on the win.

Mike Stanley showed the benefit of his summer miles by recording a PB in the Wigmore CC Evening Club ten on Wednesday.

Riding on the Iwade course Mike recorded a time of 26:22, taking 28 seconds off his PB.

The return of time trialling saw two velo riders in a field of 28 for the evening 10 event run by the Wigmore CC.

Rob Kennison took fifth place with a time of 23:13 a course best for him, whilst Matt Nunn finished 14th in 25:28, equalling his best time for the course.

Members of the Medway Velo spent a combined total of 66 hours in the saddle on Sunday, 3 May in order to raise nearly £1,000 for the Kent Air Ambulance.

Using the online platform Zwift the riders connected up their smart turbos and power meters to virtually experience mountainous terrain. As the mountain climbs, resistance is applied to the bike to give the same feel as if the riders were going up a real hill.

The plan was to complete the ascent of 8,848m which is equivalent to Mount Everest as a group however the team obliterated the target and between them climbed a total of 42,183 meters –just under five times up Mount Everest.

Most distance was covered by Rob Kennison who rode 248kms taking in no less than 10,001 meters of climbing taking him a total time of 13hrs 18mins 25secs.

Next big effort was from Steve Smith, who only got back into cycling when lockdown was called. He climbed the 8900m in 15hrs 28mins covering 216km.

Tom Knight only decided to have a bash at the mountain on Sunday morning, 12hrs 28mins later he had ridden 210km and climbed 8900 meters.

Steve Melia-Chamberlain who came up with the Everest plan made it past virtual base camp riding for 8hrs 51mins climbing 5,219 meters and covering 130km until a painful knee forced him to retire.

It was good to see velo riders popping up throughout the day to support the riders including Phil Terrett who completed his stint from his home in Spain making it a real coming together of friends without them actually having to physically meet!

Andy Smith covered 45km in 3hrs 20mins and climbed 2,281m.
Andy Hawes completed 3hrs 15mins, 1,469m and 70kms
Sally Smith who rode for 2hrs 2mins, 1,137m and 38kms
Steve Melia-Chamberlain, who coordinated the effort said: ‘We wanted to do something epic whilst we are all locked away and raise funds for a cause that as a club we have historically supported. As we may not have the opportunity to do this outside this year, we felt this was an ideal solution.’

Jon Graciano was the first velo to race this year when he took part in the South East Road Race League 3/4 category road race in Biddenden on Sunday 1 March.

The event was over 60KMs and in a large field he was able to line up along 2nd claim club mate Nathan Delaney to take on the fast pace 25mph race.

The Velo raced well and stayed with the peloton throughout. As it came to a bunch sprint he held his nerve to finish in the top 20 (provisionally).
